TENS stands for 'Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation' whereby mild electrical impulses are transmitted through the skin via surface electrodes to modify the bodies pain perception. The theory behind TENS machines is that the electric pulses cause your body to release endorphins, the body’s own pain-relieving hormones. These 'positive signals' to the brain block the slower-moving pain messages coming from your cervix and womb. The treatment is widely approved and recommended by medical professionals and is accepted for use in our hospitals- but is not provided by them.
